Hi, I’m Jonathan.

I started my career as a public defender/criminal defense attorney, where I represented people at risk of losing their liberty. That work developed within me the confidence, skill and ability to navigate people through high-stakes situations.

During this work, I noticed the inextricable link between lack of economic opportunity and involvement with the criminal legal system. The harsh reality is that those with means are able to afford better representation.

I often represented people who lost their homes, cars and wages because they could not afford adequate representation. Economic Justice, I saw, was as important as Criminal Justice

One day, I read about the debt jubilees described in the Hebrew Bible—times when debts were forgiven, slaves freed, and land returned to families. These weren’t simply moral gestures; they were ways to keep society from collapsing under the weight of unpayable debt.

I later discovered that this tradition went back even further, to the ancient Near East, where kings would declare “clean slates” to restore economic balance and allow ordinary people to begin again. Throughout history, societies have recognized that debt tends to grow faster than anyone can repay. Without periodic forgiveness, freedom itself erodes.

That’s why bankruptcy law fascinates me. It’s our modern version of a debt jubilee—a legal and humane way to reset, rebuild, and start over. My practice exists to help people do just that: reclaim stability, restore dignity, and move forward.

The Basics of Bankruptcy Law

Chapter 7 — A Fresh Start

Chapter 7 is often called a “fresh start” bankruptcy. It allows individuals to wipe out most unsecured debts—like credit cards, medical bills, and personal loans—quickly, usually within a few months. In exchange, a court-appointed trustee may sell certain non-exempt property to repay creditors. But most people keep everything they own, thanks to state and federal exemptions that protect essentials like a home, car, and retirement savings. Chapter 7 is ideal for people whose debts have become unmanageable and whose income isn’t enough to repay them.

Chapter 13 — A Structured Repayment Plan

Chapter 13 is designed for people with regular income who want to reorganize rather than erase their debts. It lets you propose a 3- to 5-year repayment plan based on your budget, often reducing what you owe or catching up on missed mortgage or car payments. When the plan ends, any remaining eligible debt is discharged. Chapter 13 can help homeowners avoid foreclosure, stop repossessions, and regain control without losing valuable assets.

Chapter 11 — Reorganization for Businesses (and Some Individuals)

Chapter 11 is the reorganization chapter used mainly by businesses seeking to stay open while restructuring their debts. It allows companies to continue operating while negotiating new payment terms with creditors. Some individuals with very high debts also use Chapter 11. The process is more complex than Chapter 13 but offers greater flexibility for business owners and entrepreneurs who need breathing room to rebuild.
